Mexican Independence of 1821
The Mexican War of Independence was an armed conflict between the Mexicans and the Spanish who owned the land which is now Mexico. The movement was started by Mexican-born Spaniards and others who wanted to gain independence from Spain. Much like the American Revolution, the Mexican War of Independence was fought purely of the soil of New Spain (which is now New Mexico) or the soil of what is today known as Mexico. This fight began in 1810 and lasted 11 years. The Mexicans believed that their government was a tyrant and should be stopped. Even the priests of Mexico believed that it would be right to go to war for their independence. The Spanish had been treating the wealthy with respect but at the same time they had been treating their poor very badly and began taxing them harder and harder. A priest by the name of Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla led the conspiracy that started the war. This came at a time where Spain was losing land in the Americas and lost even more after the war occurred. This was on of the pivotal points in the Spanish downfall in the Americas.
